Do Return Stays Make a Difference?

Updated: May 7, 2023

Perhaps we are not alone in wondering if our kitty companions remember 😅.

We make friends with our neighbour's kitty, only to return the next time and be greeted with a blank stare 😂.

And so we wonder:

Do they remember us?

Do they remember their home?

Our voice?

Our smells?

Here at our Kampung, we wonder too 🤔. Will our feline guests remember us? Will they forget what our Kampung looks like, or smells like? Will it be as though it is an entirely brand new place to them all over?

We are happy to share that...

They do remember!

When Coco first came to stay with us, the poor dear's stress was evident as she plastered her face against the corner of her cabin and wouldn't budge 😔.

We didn't want to stress her out any further, and knew that we just needed to give her time.

So upon ensuring that she has all that she needs for food, water and comfort within her cabin, along with walking by her cabin and talking to her every now and then in dulcet tones to get her familiar with our voices – we waited patiently.

True enough, in a few days, Coco gradually un-plastered her face from the corner 😆, and began to peek out of her cabin during play time, eventually coming out all together to hang out with us as companions for the day 😊.

When Coco came again for her second stay, we were thrilled to see that she warmed up real quick!

After giving her some time to take in the smells and sights of our Kampung once more from the safety and comfort of her carrier (the most familiar smelling thing to her at the moment 😆, though not her favourite place tbh) – we let her hop into her cabin.

Then lo and behold –

no longer did Coco head straight for the corner of her cabin, she was moving freely up and down the perches, and was even chatting with us from time to time! (During her first stay, we heard Coco's meow for the first time after a couple of days 😅)

By just the next day, she was already asking to be let out of her cabin for play time, and boldly exploring the cat tree (which is new to her)! 😯

Of course were so thrilled to see this that we immediately texted Coco's pawrent that she's settled in real quick this time, and that she remembers our li'l Kampung! 🥳

Other kitties too

Likewise, we've observed the same with other kitty guests here with us! While each kitty is unique in their personality and temperament, in general we have observed that they appear calmer, adjust sooner (in comparison to their first), in some cases regain appetite and regular toilet habits faster 👍🏻.

As kitty pawrents ourselves, it does make a difference to know that while adjusting to a new environment is often a stress-inducing event at the start for our fur friends – but because they do remember and familiarize themselves with where they have stayed before, the adjustment process is not in vain!

For sure we are a lot more at ease to know that when it's time for the humans to head off, our kitties will be at a staycay that they recognize, and are comfortable to be at! 😺
